Interview with Traci Johnson, Class 9
What was the event?
Day of Service with Segal Fellows and City Year Little Rock/North Little Rock
What was your specific task?
I was assigned to the group working on landscaping. People in this group worked mainly on cleaning up some of the landscaped areas and adding new mulch. One part of the group also worked on planting in one area, but I was in the mulching group. We worked at the front of the building and then in the courtyard. We cleaned up trash and debris throughout the areas as well as added mulch. With so many people helping throughout the area, this process took a lot less time than I'm sure it would have taken without so many helping, and the mulching was only one of the many projects going on that day.
Describe your overall experience.
The Day of Service was a great experience. It was so nice to get back into a direct service role, something I did a lot of in AmeriCorps but had not been doing in the same capacity recently. I enjoyed being around a number of different groups all focused on service. Being split up into groups and not knowing what we would be doing was exciting, and there were people from the Clinton School, Segal Fellows, and City Year within each group. We were able to learn about each of the different programs as well as get to know each other. This was a great opportunity and quite helpful in getting a boost of energy toward service. I was reminded just how much can get done in a very short amount of time when people all work together toward a goal. Seeing the school principal at the end of the event and her energy at having so many people around her school working to do whatever was needed was exciting. I appreciated being able to participate in such a great event. A lot of time and energy were invested in making the event valuable for both the participants and school.
